Questions you may have.
Answers to the questions families ask us most, before they pick up the phone.
If you are unsure whether we can help, please get in touch.
What happens when I first contact you?
How much does your service cost?
Will my information be kept confidential?
Can you start before the death is registered?
Yes. You can come to us at any stage, including before the death has been registered. Some notifications can only be made once the death certificate or the Tell Us Once reference is available, and we will tell you plainly which ones those are. In the meantime we organise the paperwork, draft the calls and letters, and prepare everything so the notifications can go out as soon as the certificate arrives.
Are you a solicitor, and can you give legal advice?
No. Beyond Paperwork is an independent administrative practice. We do not give legal, financial or benefits advice, and we do not draft wills or handle probate. Where a matter needs a solicitor we will say so plainly, and help you reach the right person with your papers in order.
Why would I pay you when free notification services exist?
You may not need to, and we will tell you if that is the case. Tell Us Once, the Death Notification Service, LifeLedger and Settld are free and worth using. What they cannot do is chase the account that never resolved, deal with HMRC or the council, complete the form still sitting on the table, keep the master list of what has been done, or sit with you at the kitchen table. That is the part we do.
Do you charge for benefits applications?
Yes, a fixed fee. Our fee is £180 per application, agreed in writing before we start and payable when the form is submitted. Further applications within the same engagement are £150 each. We never take a percentage of any award and we do not work on a no win, no fee basis. We do not provide specialist benefits advice or decide entitlement: the Department for Work and Pensions or your council decides. Free help with the same forms is available from Age UK, Citizens Advice and many councils.
Do you come to my home?
Yes. We visit families at home across Harlow, Bishop's Stortford, Epping and the surrounding areas. Travel is included within 20 miles of CM18 6TP, and beyond that we charge £0.45 per mile. We also work by phone, email and text, so a home visit is your choice and never a condition of working with us.
How quickly will you reply, and how do I pay?
We reply within one working day, and texts are welcome. Payment is by bank transfer on the terms set out in your written quotation. We are not currently registered for VAT, so no VAT is added to our fees.
What if I only need help with one thing?
That is fine. Ad hoc administrative support is £42 per hour in 30 minute units, with a one hour minimum, and we give a fixed quote for any piece of work likely to take more than three hours. If you would rather have regular help, ongoing support is £95 per month for up to four hours a month, with a three month minimum and one month's notice.
